My Fear - Christopher

Probably my greatest fear in life is that someone will walk across my grave and say, "He sure had a lot of potential". When I was a teenager - and making bad choices - I'll never forget my mother telling me that God had placed great gifts and talents within me and that if I didn't live up to my God given potential that I would be wasting what God had placed within me. In fact, it would be sin. In the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, we find the scriptural evidence to support my Mom's lesson. The weird thing is that Satan can twist this truth in a way that has a negative impact. A negative twist on this truth would be when people refuse to make difficult choices out of fear of making the wrong choice. It seems that in Kingdom work the fear of failure often paralyzes our ability to act in faith. It’s almost as if we feel like we’ll fail God himself if we make the wrong choice.

However, when we/I choose faith instead of fear, we realize the wonderful freedom and grace God has for those who vigorously pursue Him. Sometimes we hit the mark, sometimes we fail. But as long as we are "failing forward" and learning from our mistakes we are honoring God. Here is a quote from Theodore Roosevelt’s speech that has helped me over the years:

"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly... who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

	"body" => "<p>Probably my greatest fear in life is that someone will walk across my grave and say, "He sure had a lot of potential". When I was a teenager - and making bad choices - I'll never forget my mother telling me that God had placed great gifts and talents within me and that if I didn't live up to my God given potential that I would be wasting what God had placed within me. In fact, it would be sin. In the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, we find the scriptural evidence to support my Mom's lesson. The weird thing is that Satan can twist this truth in a way that has a negative impact. A negative twist on this truth would be when people refuse to make difficult choices out of fear of making the wrong choice. It seems that in Kingdom work the fear of failure often paralyzes our ability to act in faith. It’s almost as if we feel like we’ll fail God himself if we make the wrong choice. <br></p><p>However, when we/I choose faith instead of fear, we realize the wonderful freedom and grace God has for those who vigorously pursue Him. Sometimes we hit the mark, sometimes we fail. But as long as we are "failing forward" and learning from our mistakes we are honoring God. Here is a quote from Theodore Roosevelt’s speech that has helped me over the years:</p><p style="font-style: italic;">"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly... who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."</p>",
