Amazon: Day 4

Day 4: Village number two – Punta Alta
Village number two was called Punta Alta, I believe. It was only about a 20 - 30 minute boat ride from the last. It is organized a little better the houses are set up in a square fashion with a huge grass field in the middle. As soon as you come into the Village, which had 91 stairs to climb as it was on a cliff, was a small Catholic Church and school. We had gotten permission from the village president the day before to see if we could come evangelize, and the president, who was a women, said yes. I only mention that because it was really interesting culturally.
Today I worked most of the morning talking with Villagers, and doing the eye exam and glasses. Later in the Day at the evening service, Andrew, who was working with me from Indiana, in his testimony talked about how when Jesus comes into your life it is like having new glasses to be able to see the world through God’s eyes. He was right on, and we got to talk about this to people in the morning. VBS, dental, hair/spa, and men’s ministry also were going on in the morning.
At lunch we go back to the boat, which if I have not mentioned is really nice even sleeping in a hammock is not bad at all, or ham-mach as a girl from Indiana pronounced…so funny. The food is great as well. I love the fried bananas in the morning. It is all really good. Ok back to after lunch, we threw water balloons at boats around us as the kids had come back to their boats. (Some families see the boat, and stopped because they knew who it was.) It was so fun to see a kids face light up as Wes Ashworth lit them up with a water balloon, or to see Doug Wofford just break one on himself. Even in our down time, we had a lot of fun.
The afternoon marked our first soccer match. I was pumped for this even though I had only played el football Americano as a kid. We had been told no one had ever scored on the Brazilians, or even a shot on goal. In the first half we had three shots on goal, but they scored 4.
At halftime, Wes Ashworth shared his testimony and I shared the gospel story. We really focused on sin and our need for a savior, which Jesus freely gives to us. Wes did a great job, and one man responded to the gospel. It was cool to see Wes lead him in prayer and watch a man become a new brother in Christ.
The second half of the game was a historic moment. Kendall Huff had three shots on goal in that half, and one goal. He was so proud, and so were we. We had scored on the Brazilians, which is more than team USA can say. I wanted to see him take his shirt off and slide on his knees like soccer guys do, but he didn’t. Kendall talked about this all day. Ken Griffin took the most shots…to the chest and leg. Ken is so tough. One of the shots made an imprint of the ball on his side. Kendall got a picture.
That night, we had another service. Pastor Abimiel presented the gospel, Andrew gave testimony (which I mentioned earlier), and Heather from Indiana. Heather, who I got to talk with earlier that day as she prepared her testimony, has a powerful story. Both her parents died when she was young due to bad choices, her dad at 3, and her mom at 10. Even while her mom raised her and her sister, it was not a good situation. They went to live with an aunt, and through all this she was confused and alone. It was in this time she was saved. Jesus showed her she was loved, not alone, and has a heavenly father not only this but a family, the people of God. She takes comfort in verses about God being a father to the fatherless. It was so strong…I am crying even now reflecting on this story of the love of God.
The villagers were so appreciative of us being there. They wanted to sing to us. They sang us two songs about God and his love. So awesome to see the family of God all over the world even in remote villages on the Amazon, Jesus is Lord. God really is so good, and his grace to me this week is amazing.

"BlogPost" => array( "id" => "50", "title" => "Amazon: Day 4", "slug" => "amazon-day-4", "body" => "<p>Day 4: Village number two – Punta Alta <br> <br>Village number two was called Punta Alta, I believe. It was only about a 20 - 30 minute boat ride from the last. It is organized a little better the houses are set up in a square fashion with a huge grass field in the middle. As soon as you come into the Village, which had 91 stairs to climb as it was on a cliff, was a small Catholic Church and school. We had gotten permission from the village president the day before to see if we could come evangelize, and the president, who was a women, said yes. I only mention that because it was really interesting culturally. <br> <br>Today I worked most of the morning talking with Villagers, and doing the eye exam and glasses. Later in the Day at the evening service, Andrew, who was working with me from Indiana, in his testimony talked about how when Jesus comes into your life it is like having new glasses to be able to see the world through God’s eyes. He was right on, and we got to talk about this to people in the morning. VBS, dental, hair/spa, and men’s ministry also were going on in the morning. <br> <br>At lunch we go back to the boat, which if I have not mentioned is really nice even sleeping in a hammock is not bad at all, or ham-mach as a girl from Indiana pronounced…so funny. The food is great as well. I love the fried bananas in the morning. It is all really good. Ok back to after lunch, we threw water balloons at boats around us as the kids had come back to their boats. (Some families see the boat, and stopped because they knew who it was.) It was so fun to see a kids face light up as Wes Ashworth lit them up with a water balloon, or to see Doug Wofford just break one on himself. Even in our down time, we had a lot of fun. <br> <br>The afternoon marked our first soccer match. I was pumped for this even though I had only played el football Americano as a kid. We had been told no one had ever scored on the Brazilians, or even a shot on goal. In the first half we had three shots on goal, but they scored 4. <br> <br>At halftime, Wes Ashworth shared his testimony and I shared the gospel story. We really focused on sin and our need for a savior, which Jesus freely gives to us. Wes did a great job, and one man responded to the gospel. It was cool to see Wes lead him in prayer and watch a man become a new brother in Christ. <br> <br>The second half of the game was a historic moment. Kendall Huff had three shots on goal in that half, and one goal. He was so proud, and so were we. We had scored on the Brazilians, which is more than team USA can say. I wanted to see him take his shirt off and slide on his knees like soccer guys do, but he didn’t. Kendall talked about this all day. Ken Griffin took the most shots…to the chest and leg. Ken is so tough. One of the shots made an imprint of the ball on his side. Kendall got a picture. <br> <br>That night, we had another service. Pastor Abimiel presented the gospel, Andrew gave testimony (which I mentioned earlier), and Heather from Indiana. Heather, who I got to talk with earlier that day as she prepared her testimony, has a powerful story. Both her parents died when she was young due to bad choices, her dad at 3, and her mom at 10. Even while her mom raised her and her sister, it was not a good situation. They went to live with an aunt, and through all this she was confused and alone. It was in this time she was saved. Jesus showed her she was loved, not alone, and has a heavenly father not only this but a family, the people of God. She takes comfort in verses about God being a father to the fatherless. It was so strong…I am crying even now reflecting on this story of the love of God. <br> <br>The villagers were so appreciative of us being there. They wanted to sing to us. They sang us two songs about God and his love. So awesome to see the family of God all over the world even in remote villages on the Amazon, Jesus is Lord.
