Day 3: Meet the Village People
We went to our first village on Sunday. We had a time of worship on the boat with songs, a short devotional, and communion. It was a sweet time of worship on the Sabbath.
I can’t recall the name of the village, but it had around 60 families living there. They were pretty spread out over the area, but we found a central spot to set up. Pastor Abimiel ministers in this village, and he went with us as we had picked him up from the port at Parintins the night before. He said the village president had become Christian last year, but that the village still has only 10 Christian families of 60. They also face some persecution and ridicule for following Jesus. Two men were now studying in the seminary with Pastor Elmer in Parintins.
Ministries we did consisted of: men’s, women’s, VBS, eyeglasses, dental, hair/spa. In men’s ministry, Pastor Abimiel talked to the men about Jesus. I got to share my testimony to them along with Lauren from Indianapolis. One man prayed to receive Jesus out of this time. We also gave them fishing line, and some lures.
At VBS, I caught some of the bible story of David and Goliath. Ken Griffin played Goliath. He was awesome. As David, who was one of the translators, struck him down with the sling, Ken stumbled around and fell on the muddy wet ground with out hesitation straight on his back. You have to love that commitment. I have it on video as well. Priscila, led VBS that day, and you could see why Pastor Clayton was so impressed with her helping her get more training in the US. She did a great job!
At dental, eyeglasses, and hair/spa, people got teeth pulled, got glasses to see, haircuts, and fingernails painted. As the team did these things, they go to talk with people about their lives and how Jesus had transformed them. Our translators are all amazing. I didn’t get to see women’s ministry, but saw them hand out some sowing materials and talking about their lives.
At the end of the day, Pastor Abimiel gathered all the people and we had a mini service. He preached about a personal relationship with Jesus, and how being good or religious could not save you. He did a great job. It reminded me that even in a village in the Amazon River the problems in our lives are similar. In Dallas we have to tell people it is not about just going to church and doing religious things then God will save you, nor can you be a good enough person to the perfect Holy God…we all fall short. But whether you are in the Amazon, Dallas, or anywhere else, it is Jesus that saves. It is Jesus that is the way to God. Jesus came from heaven to save sinners, which is all of us. It is really cool to see how Jesus is the answer to life, salvation, and how to know God no matter where you are. As Christians, we can talk to anyone about that because we know Jesus. People in the village prayed to receive Jesus, I think it was five so six conversions, new brothers and sisters in Christ today!
Fun notes for the day riding the speedboat to the next Village with the Pastor to tell them we were coming (Kendall and I got to do this), and hiking into the jungle to see a tree so big if you hollowed it out you could drive a car through. I have video and pictures of both…so cool.
Also the donations you brought to church are being handed out in the Villages. On the 20-hour boat ride from Menaus to the villages, we had family packs of all the donations to hand out in the villages. We have around 110 between both groups. It is great to see the thankfulness of the people. So thanks church family for your support.

"BlogPost" => array( "id" => "49", "title" => "Amazon: Day 3", "slug" => "amazon-day-3", "body" => "<p>Day 3: Meet the Village People <br> <br>We went to our first village on Sunday. We had a time of worship on the boat with songs, a short devotional, and communion. It was a sweet time of worship on the Sabbath. <br> <br> I can’t recall the name of the village, but it had around 60 families living there. They were pretty spread out over the area, but we found a central spot to set up. Pastor Abimiel ministers in this village, and he went with us as we had picked him up from the port at Parintins the night before. He said the village president had become Christian last year, but that the village still has only 10 Christian families of 60. They also face some persecution and ridicule for following Jesus. Two men were now studying in the seminary with Pastor Elmer in Parintins. <br> <br>Ministries we did consisted of: men’s, women’s, VBS, eyeglasses, dental, hair/spa. In men’s ministry, Pastor Abimiel talked to the men about Jesus. I got to share my testimony to them along with Lauren from Indianapolis. One man prayed to receive Jesus out of this time. We also gave them fishing line, and some lures. <br> <br>At VBS, I caught some of the bible story of David and Goliath. Ken Griffin played Goliath. He was awesome. As David, who was one of the translators, struck him down with the sling, Ken stumbled around and fell on the muddy wet ground with out hesitation straight on his back. You have to love that commitment. I have it on video as well. Priscila, led VBS that day, and you could see why Pastor Clayton was so impressed with her helping her get more training in the US. She did a great job!<br> <br>At dental, eyeglasses, and hair/spa, people got teeth pulled, got glasses to see, haircuts, and fingernails painted. As the team did these things, they go to talk with people about their lives and how Jesus had transformed them. Our translators are all amazing. I didn’t get to see women’s ministry, but saw them hand out some sowing materials and talking about their lives. <br> <br>At the end of the day, Pastor Abimiel gathered all the people and we had a mini service. He preached about a personal relationship with Jesus, and how being good or religious could not save you. He did a great job. It reminded me that even in a village in the Amazon River the problems in our lives are similar. In Dallas we have to tell people it is not about just going to church and doing religious things then God will save you, nor can you be a good enough person to the perfect Holy God…we all fall short. But whether you are in the Amazon, Dallas, or anywhere else, it is Jesus that saves. It is Jesus that is the way to God. Jesus came from heaven to save sinners, which is all of us. It is really cool to see how Jesus is the answer to life, salvation, and how to know God no matter where you are. As Christians, we can talk to anyone about that because we know Jesus. People in the village prayed to receive Jesus, I think it was five so six conversions, new brothers and sisters in Christ today! <br> <br>Fun notes for the day riding the speedboat to the next Village with the Pastor to tell them we were coming (Kendall and I got to do this), and hiking into the jungle to see a tree so big if you hollowed it out you could drive a car through. I have video and pictures of both…so cool. <br> <br>Also the donations you brought to church are being handed out in the Villages. On the 20-hour boat ride from Menaus to the villages, we had family packs of all the donations to hand out in the villages. We have around 110 between both groups. It is great to see the thankfulness of the people.
